Strut Systems Installation was recently contacted by a major regional hospital to custom design and install an aluminum catwalk platform for routine maintenance access. The hospital required a reliable and structurally sound solution that would safely allow for maintenance workers to regularly service industrial fan motors that were suspended 15 feet above the ground.

Prior to the design process, our team conducted a detailed site visit to verify fan clearances and confirm dimension measurements. The elevated work platform would not only have to avoid obstructing door openings and the hallway below, but it also would have to support the weight associated with workers removing 800 lb. fan motors for servicing.

Designing and Installing A Hanging Scaffold Platform for A Major Hospital

The two greatest challenges faced during the elevated work platform design process were the need for the aluminum catwalk to be able to support the weight of the fans during servicing, and the requirement for minimizing overhead obstructions. With each fan motor weighing in at over 800 lbs, our team had to carefully design a system with enough support to handle both the weight of the fan motors and of the maintenance team servicing them.

The fans themselves were located 15 feet above the ground, which posed a significant challenge with designing a system that would not obstruct doorways or overhead space in the hallway. We also needed to integrate ladders for easy accessibility, railings for safety, and a system for lowering the fan motors for routine maintenance.

How To Determine The Best Custom Work Platform Solution

Our design team had to carefully consider all options in order to design a system that perfectly fit the situation. The first requirements of handling the fan motor weight was primarily achieved by increasing the number of support contact points, and through careful selection of an aluminum catwalk platform, which is incredibly lightweight yet maintains excellent load bearing capacity.

In order to not infringe upon more overhead space than needed, our team designed an elevated work platform system that hung 14 feet above the floor, which doubled as a solution for maintenance crews not having to lower the fans far to service them. OSHA compliant railings and ladders were also added to meet all requirements, plus a motor pick off point with a chain hoist for easy lowering of fan motor components to the ground.
