Strut Systems Installation was recently approached by a mechanical contractor looking to improve heavy equipment access for a local university’s facilities and maintenance crews in their natural science building. The project involved designing and installing a secure work platform system to provide safe access for servicing large holding tanks located in a deep containment pit. Our solution featured a sturdy Unistrut framed platform with removable deck sections, anchored to the walls for stability, and finished with galvanized bar grating, handrails, and custom toe kicks to ensure maximum durability and safety.
Elevated Platform for University Facilities and Maintenance Crews
For this particular project, we designed and installed a durable platform to enhance heavy equipment access for the university’s facilities and maintenance teams. The holding tanks and access valves were positioned in a 12-ft. deep containment pit, requiring a stable and secure work surface. To address this, we framed the platform using Unistrut P5501, anchoring it to the walls for maximum stability. Removable 1-1/2” galvanized bar grating deck sections were incorporated, allowing easy access to the tanks when needed. Additionally, Unistrut P1000 handrails were installed where required for safety, and the platform was finished with a custom toe kick for added security and durability.
What is an Elevated Work Platform?
An elevated work platform is a raised structure designed to provide safe and stable access to areas that are difficult to reach, often used for maintenance, inspections, and equipment servicing. Elevated work platforms can be permanent or temporary and are commonly constructed from durable materials like steel or aluminum to support workers and their tools.
These platforms often include safety features such as guardrails, toe kicks, and non-slip surfaces to prevent falls and ensure secure footing. In industrial and commercial settings, elevated work platforms are essential for accessing heavy equipment, storage areas, or confined spaces, improving both efficiency and worker safety.
What is Heavy Equipment Access?
Heavy equipment access refers to the ability to safely and efficiently reach, operate, and maintain large machinery or industrial systems in various settings. This often involves the use of elevated work platforms, reinforced walkways, and specialized entry points to ensure workers can perform inspections, repairs, and routine servicing without risk.
Proper heavy equipment access is critical in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and facility maintenance, where large tanks, HVAC systems, and mechanical units require regular upkeep. By implementing secure platforms, handrails, and removable deck sections, businesses can enhance worker safety, streamline maintenance processes, and extend the lifespan of their equipment.
Industrial Tank Cleaning and Maintenance Problem Solved!
Our custom elevated work platform provided the university’s facilities and maintenance teams with a safe, stable, and efficient solution for accessing and servicing their large holding tanks. By integrating removable galvanized bar grating deck sections, secure Unistrut framing, and handrails, we improved both safety and workflow, allowing maintenance crews to perform their tasks with greater ease and confidence. This solution not only enhanced worker protection but also reduced downtime and improved the longevity of critical equipment.
