Strut Systems Installation recently designed and installed a custom maintenance platform at a local hospital. The aim of the job was to improve access to equipment for routine service. Without this solution, the hospital would be forced to rent scaffolding or scissor lifts every time maintenance on essential equipment was needed. Let’s take a closer look at why a maintenance platform is the perfect solution for areas where equipment access is unavailable.
What Is A Maintenance Platform?

A maintenance platform is a secure, elevated structure designed to provide personnel with safe and efficient access to critical equipment or machinery that requires routine inspection, servicing, or repair.
Typically used in industrial, aerospace, transportation, or facility management settings, these platforms are engineered to support human weight and tools while allowing maintenance workers to reach otherwise inaccessible areas (such as overhead systems, engines, HVAC units, or control panels).
Unlike general access platforms, maintenance platforms are specifically tailored to align with service points and may include features like guardrails, ladders, non-slip surfaces, and adjustable heights to ensure safety and functionality during technical work.
The Need For Custom Maintenance Platform Access

When the hospital was first constructed, actuators, valves, and various pieces of equipment were installed in locations that required the use of scaffolding and scissor lifts to reach them. As construction progressed, the paths to these areas became obstructed and inaccessible to maintenance crews. Ultimately, SSI was contacted to construct a solution for this lack of accessibility.
When planning and executing any construction project, it’s important to consider the routine service and maintenance needs of both the equipment and the facility and factor them into the design phase. In this specific instance, failure to do so resulted in the need for our custom built solution later on.
Designing Custom Maintenance Platforms For Routine Equipment Servicing

The project location and height above ground presented some challenges that our team was able to devise a workable solution for. The majority of equipment that access needed to be provided to, was located 22 feet above the finished flooring. Our team designed and installed custom maintenance platforms to reach this height without obstructing the walkway below.
Once in the rafters, much of the space surrounding the actuators and valves was blocked off by adjacent duct work. SSI designed additional smaller platforms, with custom ladders, allowing for maintenance workers to safely access all important equipment that needed attention.
